“My center is giving way, my right is in retreat; situation excellent. I shall attack.” These famous words by Marshal Ferdinand Foch at the first battle of the Marne in 1914 capture his all-out aggressive mentality which propelled him to Supreme Allied Commander in 1918. This red wine blend consists 50% Maréchal Foch, a grape named in honor of the commander that ended WW1. The other half is Léon Millot, bred from the same cross in France’s Alsace region by the same French viticulturist, Eugène Kuhlmann. These two grapes are true siblings, built to survive harsh climates. Bold, dark, and unflinching, this blend doesn’t retreat, just like Marshal Foch.
» Winemaking notes:
The Marshal is a 50/50 blend of Maréchal Foch and Léon Millot, two rare hybrid grapes from the same family playing very different roles - Foch laying down a crimson hue, savory weight, and umami palate, with Millot lifting the wine with brighter fruit and acid.
» Tasting notes:
Savory aromas reminiscent of sweetly cured meat lead on the nose, followed by bright acid on the mid palate, and wrapped up in a soft plum finish that lingers between sips
» Ingredients:
Maréchal Foch & Léon Millot grapes, water, yeast*, nutrient*, lactic acid bacteria*, sulfites.
*Yeast, bacteria, and nutrients were used during fermentation and removed by natural settling and filtration.
