A lifeline between ships, the Signalman stood watch with flags, lights, & grit by transmitting vital orders across smoke filled skies & open seas. These sailors were the voice of the fleet, fluent in semaphore & Morse, guiding convoys, landing craft, & directing warships through chaos. Their role was paramount in directing fire, calling for aid, & relaying mission critical commands while completely exposed, & under enemy attack. Though the rate is gone, it set the standard for clarity, precision, & courage under fire.
In honor of Double Purple Heart Signalman Emery Vernon Hildebrandt, who served aboard the USS South Dakota, we honor the men whose vigilance & skill kept missions on course, convoys aligned, & commands flowing in the heat of battle.
» Winemaking notes:
Hand picked field blend of 777 and 115 Pinot Noir from La Dolce Vita Vineyards on the northern edge western slopes of the Tualatin Hills AVA. Punched down twice daily during a 2 week ferment. Unfined and polished filtered with natural and added sulfites for freshness, no additional preservatives, animal products, or residual sugar. Aged 18 months on fine lees and French Medium+ toasted oak. Enjoy slightly chilled by itself or with a light meal.
» Tasting notes:
Signalman shows all the precursors of being truly exceptional, it reminds us of our beloved 2016 and 2018 vintages, both standouts in Dauntless history. The nose bursts with a fruit-forward bouquet, leading into a palate of cherry, pomegranate, and cola, carried by bright acidity and finishing with smooth, subtle vanilla.

*Yeast, bacteria, and nutrients were used during fermentation and removed by natural settling and filtration.
