The Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862 was the first combat between ironclad warships, the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia. On the first day the Virginia was able to destroy two wooden federal ships, and was about to attack a third which had run aground, but instead retired to tend to its wounded. During the night the federal ironclad Monitor arrived to defend the stuck ship, and engaged the Virginia the next morning. The two ironclads dueled for hours with neither being able to inflict significant damage on the other. The battle gained worldwide attention & signaled a new era of naval warfare with navies across the world halting further construction of wooden hulled ships. The Monitor and Virginia defined a new class of ship and signaled the beginning of the pre-dreadnought era which lasted until 1906.
