2022 Schönburger | Periscope | Old 47 Estate Vineyard

With 33 ships sunk combining over 116,000 tons, the USS Tang is the United States most successful submarine. On Oct 24th, 1944 the USS Tang found herself alone in the Taiwan straight tracking a large IJN convoy. That night she fearlessly sprung up in the middle of the convoy & unloaded her torpedoes using hit & dive tactics. At 02:30 on the 25th she launched her final torpedo which malfunctioned in a circular run and came around and struck her aft. Of the 87 crew, 13 were able to make a harrowing underwater escape, with 5 surviving as POWs. In her short & illustrious career the USS Tang received 4 battle stars & 2 Presidential Unit Citations, while Cmdr. Richard O’Kane survived to receive the Medal of Honor.

Tasting notes: Periscope is as tropical as it gets! Notes of guava, apricot, pear, and eucalyptus with a creamy palate full of kiwi. This rare varietal is sure to turn heads for its one of a kind bouquet.

Winemaking: Schönburger is a rare white varietal that is a cross of Pinot noir x (Chasselas x Muscat Hamburg). It is the "canary in the coalmine" as it is the earliest ripening grape in the vineyard. Schönburger is an adaptable cool climate grape that creates a full bodied fruity wine. The planting at Old 47 Estate includes a spattering of Riesling (≈5%) which adds nice undertones to the tropical profile. We softened the palate with a malo-lactic ferment and polish filtered for clarity and stability. Best enjoyed chilled between 45-55°F
