2023 Schönburger | Periscope | Tualatin Hills AVA

History:
With 33 ships sunk combining over 116,000 tons, the USS Tang is the United States most successful submarine. On Oct 24th, 1944 the USS Tang found herself alone in the Taiwan straight tracking a large IJN convoy. That night she fearlessly sprung up in the middle of the convoy & unloaded her torpedoes using hit & dive tactics. At 02:30 on the 25th she launched her final torpedo which malfunctioned in a circular run and came around and struck her aft. Of the 87 crew, 13 were able to make a harrowing underwater escape, with 5 surviving as POWs. In her short & illustrious career the USS Tang received 4 battle stars & 2 Presidential Unit Citations, while Cmdr. Richard O’Kane survived to receive the Medal of Honor.

Periscope is as tropical as it gets! If you’re a fan of Viognier, you’ll love this rare varietal. Bursting with notes of guava, apricot, pear, and a touch of eucalyptus, it offers a creamy palate layered with kiwi. Periscope’s exotic bouquet is sure to turn heads and leave a lasting impression.

Winemaking: 
Schönburger is a rare white varietal that is a cross of Pinot noir x (Chasselas x Muscat Hamburg). Known as the “canary in the coalmine,” it’s the earliest ripening grape in our vineyard — offering a first glimpse of harvest. This adaptable cool-climate varietal yields a full-bodied, fruit-forward wine with a lush tropical profile. Our planting at Old 47 Estate includes a touch of Riesling (≈5%), which lends elegant undertones and added complexity. Best enjoyed chilled between 45–55°F.

Schönburger grapes, yeast*, nutrient*, sulfites. 
*Yeast and nutrients were used during fermentation and removed by natural settling and filtration.
