Taxis to Hell – and Back – Into the Jaws of Death is a series of iconic photos taken on June 6, 1944 depicting soldiers of the 1st Army Division approaching the “Easy Red” sector of Omaha Beach during the battle of Normandy, known as Operation Overlord. Preceded by a chaotic 1,200-plane airborne assault, the beach landings carried over 132,000 troops across the English channel and were the largest combat operation ever performed by the Coast Guard. Overlord heralded the “race to Berlin” against the Soviet Union, and is what some consider to be the start
of the Cold War.
