World War I (1914 - 1918) was a collision between the old world and modern technology. Known as the “Great War,” it was the first time in history that nations fought with planes, tanks, and machine guns with devastating effect. These technological advancements perpetuated trench warfare and a grueling stalemate across four fronts. The aftermath spurred revolution, redrew borders, and induced economic depression which ultimately led to World War II. We pay homage to those who faced the unimaginable perils of no man’s land: the treacherous strip of wasteland between opposing trenches.
Tasting notes: A smoky-savory spice comes on first and is followed by cherry-apple and earth. A fruit forward palate is finished with a touch of cola. Fresh acid coats the mouthfeel for a long finish.
Winemaking notes: This is a single clone pinot noir called Wädenswil. Wädenswil is known within the pinot family as the deeper, darker pinot clone. Wädenswil has been ripening very well these last few years which makes it a good stand alone pinot noir. I swing for a big red with Wädenswil, I don't necessarily get there, but I end up somewhere in between pinot noir and a big red - thus the name No Man's Land. I give it a 30% whole cluster treatment for some soft stem tannin, press it hard for skin and seed tannin, and oak it with a combination of heavy and medium toasted French oak. The heavy toast gives it a savory profile, while the medium adds a complex body to the palate.
Process: Hand picked pinot noir 100% wädenswil clone. Cold soaked for five days at 10°C. Punched down daily. Extended maceration for one week. Malo-lactic fermented in barrel. Stirred on the lees for stability & flavor profile. Aged with French heavy and medium toasted oak. Ideally stored neck down between a constant 10-18°C (50-65°F)
